Individual disability income insurance
Compare disability coverage alongside your workplace plan.
Aligned Path reviews existing benefits and requests individual disability insurance options for advisor referrals and people coming to us directly. Start with the records behind the coverage, then compare written offers on common terms.
How much individual coverage can you get if you already have coverage through work?
There is no universal supplement amount. An insurer reviews your documented earned income and existing disability benefits under its issue and participation rules: how much it can issue itself and how much total coverage it permits alongside other policies. Occupation, health, age, state and the coverage requested also affect an offer.
A household income gap is useful for planning, but it does not establish how much a carrier will approve. A carrier may treat employer-paid group benefits differently in its participation calculation. We bring the group certificate and income details into the carrier review, including how premiums are paid and any individual coverage already in force or being applied for.
For educational estimates, use the disability income gap calculator. The group disability article for high earners explains benefit caps and covered-pay differences; the individual disability insurance guide covers definitions, periods and riders.
What to bring to the comparison
You or your advisor can use the disability quote request. Describe whether you are supplementing employer coverage, reviewing an individual policy or starting without coverage. Include your occupation and actual duties, state, income breakdown and the benefit and periods you want to discuss. Use the “Anything else we should know?” field for bonus, commission and business-income details. If you do not know a term yet, say so.
- Workplace coverage: the current group certificate, benefit schedule and amendments. A short benefits summary may omit definitions, offsets and limits.
- Income and premium funding: gather current pay information and available W-2s or tax returns with relevant schedules. Business owners may need business returns as well. Payroll or employer records help confirm who pays the group premium. The carrier determines which records and years it needs.
- Other disability coverage: individual policies, riders, recent proposals and pending applications. Include the monthly benefits and who pays each premium.
The first request starts the discussion. We identify missing records and explain what a carrier needs next, including health information through its underwriting process.
Self-employed or running a practice? The self-employed disability preparation guide explains income records, actual duties and personal versus business needs, with a checklist to print before the conversation.
What the comparison returns
We line up the benefit amount, disability definition, waiting period, benefit duration, riders and premium basis. When an offer differs, the comparison should show the difference: a shorter benefit period, a different definition, an omitted rider or an individual exclusion can change what the premium buys.
Keep preliminary quotes separate from underwritten offers. Record the document date and any outstanding conditions, then check the issued policy and endorsements against the terms you accepted. Underwriting may change the amount, price or restrictions, or result in no offer.
For advisor referrals, the worksheet below keeps contract terms, planning assumptions and unresolved questions visible in one place. It can also help document why existing coverage fits the plan or why a proposed policy leaves a need unresolved.
Aligned Path is an independent insurance brokerage. If a policy is placed, the carrier pays us a commission. Referring advisors earn no insurance commission. We charge no separate brokerage, shopping, placement or servicing fee to advisors or clients on any line. Product and state availability vary.

Source notes, checked October 5, 2026: Guardian’s supplemental disability explanation describes combining individual and workplace coverage. It describes Guardian’s products; a written offer may differ.
